Fish farm effluents cause metabolic depression, reducing energy stores and growth in the reef-forming coral Lophelia pertusa

چکیده

Cold-water corals (CWCs) have come under increasing pressure from human activities over the last decades. Of particular concern in Norway is potential impact of open net pen aquaculture on CWC reefs formed by Lophelia pertusa, a threatened and declining habitat. We conducted 1 yr situ transplantation experiment corresponding field measurements 2 located close to fish farms elucidate impacts particulate organic waste released coral colonies. Our study provided new evidence negative effluents L. pertusa ecophysiology. After yr, both naturally occurring transplanted corals, at distances ranging 250 m km downstream what would be regarded as an average-sized Norwegian farm, exhibited depressed metabolic rates compared outside main depositional footprint farms. The depression impeded energy acquisition, reducing growth reserves up 70 50%, respectively. No clear threshold for significant biological could detected along distance gradient. Instead, gradual decrease rates, lipid occurred with modelled sedimentation rate farm. strong statistical correlation between oxygen consumption, growth, stores implies that predictions short-term ecophysiology reef development may achievable future. This significantly improve ability management make informed decisions licensing near reefs.

210Pb-226Ra chronology reveals rapid growth rate of Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa on world’s largest cold-water coral reef

Here we show the use of the 210Pb-226Ra excess method to determine the growth rate of two corals from the world’s largest known cold-water coral reef, Røst Reef, north of the Arctic circle off Norway. Colonies of each of the two species that build the reef, Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata, were collected alive at 350 m depth using a submersible. Pb and Ra isotopes were measured along the...

First observations of the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa in mid-Atlantic canyons of the USA

The structure-forming, cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa is widely distributed throughout the North Atlantic Ocean and also occurs in the South Atlantic, North Pacific and Indian oceans. This species has formed extensive reefs, chiefly in deep water, along the continental margins of Europe and the United States, particularly off the southeastern U.S. coastline and in the Gulf of Mexico. There w...

Embryogenesis and Larval Biology of the Cold-Water Coral Lophelia pertusa

Cold-water coral reefs form spectacular and highly diverse ecosystems in the deep sea but little is known about reproduction, and virtually nothing about the larval biology in these corals. This study is based on data from two locations of the North East Atlantic and documents the first observations of embryogenesis and larval development in Lophelia pertusa, the most common framework-building ...

Wave energy and swimming performance shape coral reef fish assemblages.

Physical factors often have an overriding influence on the distribution patterns of organisms, and can ultimately shape the long-term structure of communities. Although distribution patterns in sessile marine organisms have frequently been attributed to functional characteristics interacting with wave-induced water motion, similar evidence for mobile organisms is lacking. Links between fin morp...

The Symbiosis between Lophelia pertusa and Eunice norvegica Stimulates Coral Calcification and Worm Assimilation

We investigated the interactions between the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa and its associated polychaete Eunice norvegica by quantifying carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) budgets of tissue assimilation, food partitioning, calcification and respiration using (13)C and (15)N enriched algae and zooplankton as food sources. During incubations both species were kept either together or in separate cham...
